After moving to Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In 1980, Harden attended the University of Texas at Austin and received a bachelor's degree in theatre. Harden was accepted into NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 in order to obtain her MFA.
