JoyceDeWitt first performed on stage at the age of 13 years old. At 13, Dewitt began appearing on the stage. She received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. When she performed in her summer stock she was encouraged by the director to enroll at UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was granted the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA, she worked as a secretary up to her first appearance on television on an episode of Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has said that the two never had a conversation. DeWitt's character as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 season is the one that made her most famous. She was part of the show's pilot and was offered the role. Janet was also featured in an episode of the show The Ropers in which she starred in in 1979. DeWitt made her acting debut in an episode in 1984 on Three's Company. In June 1991, she returned to acting, playing a part in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. In the following year, she appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired an episode in 1997 that featured a character based on her. The voice was performed in part by a different actress. The actress was also featured in an episode Cybill. She's been on shows on TV such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild in 2000.
